I never go to bomb shelters during missile alerts. This morning was no exception. But I popped in around 0640 after a run to check on how residents were coping. Most people appeared relaxed at Zvirynetska, hunkered down with smart phones and lawn chairs. Several well-fed stray dogs were in attendance, enjoying the the excitement and looking for hand outs.
Early on Saturday morning, there were several waves of attacks lasting more than five hours, according to Ukraine’s Air Force, which shot down 71. Some 66 of them were aimed at Kyiv.
Traditionally, on the fourth Saturday of November, at 16:00, the memory of millions of Ukrainians killed during the 1932-1933 genocide is commemorated with a moment of silence and lighting of candles in the central squares of the city, near the monuments to the victims of the Holodomor, in temples and in the Hall of Memory.
Today marks the 90th anniversary of that disaster.
