On the tenth day in the second year of fascistic Russia’s nine-year genocidal campaign against Ukraine a Belarusian court sentenced Nobel Laureate Ales Bialiatski to ten years in jail1.
More than a quarter of a century earlier, in 1996, Ales set up Viasna in Minsk. That was the year Lukashenko & Co. chucked Slavomir Adamovich (Славамір Адамовіч) in jail for writing the poem, titled “Kill the President.2”
I forget how, exactly, we got Slavomir out of jail, but Ales and Garry helped.
Nobel Prize Is No Defense Against Jail for a Winner in Belarus. Ales Bialiatski, last year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has been sentenced by Belarus to 10 years in prison, on charges that rights advocates have dismissed as politically motivated. (The New York Times, March 3, 2023)
