Forward lines of own troops (FLOTs) aren’t hard to find1. Study yours in the remaining days before we enter the war’s next phase, which will likely last until autumn. Our mission is straightforward: to atomize Russia-occupation forces occupying the pink blobs.
Aside from much publicized anti-tank weapons, MANPADS and small arms, nimble units equipped with loitering munitions and other non-line-of-sign armament will likely determine the outcome of close quarters combat, so be supple and able to run sub-6 minute miles, at least two, consecutively.
The key to sleeping safely in Russia-occupied areas during Phase 3 (June, July, August, September, etc) will be gathering in small groups and huddling in dugouts at night. On the contact line, those at greater risk of being blown to smithereens nap less, on average, unless they can see in the dark, a capability Uncle Joe has promised to help provide.
Putin has set in motion the liquidation of the Russian empire as a military force. You are that motion, so don’t stiffen up.
We haven't seen the Russians make a whole lot of progress in the Donbas area or, quite frankly, in the south. And that's a result of the skill and the bravery and, quite frankly, the kinds of capabilities that the United States and so many other countries are providing the Ukrainians in their self-defense. — John F. Kirby, Pentagon Press Conference (May 2, 2022)
To the West of Kyiv is an ocean of flat fields (well, a bracelet of small sparsely-populated towns, then Zhytomyr and Lviv, the large islands of Poland and Germany, then an ocean). To the North is Chernihiv and a huge smear of boggy marshes extending into Belarus and western Russia called the Polesian Lowland, or Polissia. Monotonous terrain stretches to the East, all the way to Donbas, reminding us that planet is indeed an oblate spheroid. Odesa and the Black Sea are almost due South, with Cherkasy, Kremenchuk, Dnipro and Zaporizhia straddling the Dnipro — the fourth longest river in Europe. The hilliest part— the Carpathian mountain range — is tucked in the southwestern corner of Zakarpattia bordering Romania, Slovakia and Romania. Day 24. Green IR Lasers (March 19, 2022)
